To commemorate Women’s Month in South Africa, Constitution Hill presents Layers of a Black Transgender Woman. Presented and curated by Transgender activist Yaya Mavundla, the exhibition explores gender politics and identity, seeking to spark fresh conversation around inclusivity by showcasing different layers of womanhood and redefining outdated labels about what it means to be a woman.

The exhibition features prominent black transgender women at the forefront of transgender visibility in South Africa; Moja Love’s The Way Ngingakhona Reality Star Tholang Motshumi, Miss South Africa top 30 finalist Lehlogonolo Machaba and activist and Mzansi Magic’s Becoming Reality TV Star Yaya Mavundla.

In curating the exhibition Mavundla collaborated with South African photographer Terra Dick to capture the three women on their own terms, and Nigerian illustrator Chukwudi Udoye who has interpreted these images graphically.

In addition to the artworks, the exhibition is also accompanied by a series of dialogues aimed at helping inform communities about the challenges faced by black transgender women and the importance of understanding inclusivity and gender identity. These dialogues are especially important as black transgender women face so many challenges, particularly from sectors of the public service whose support is so desperately needed – including government departments such as police, health, home affairs and education.

The exhibition is on show at the Women's Gaol in Constitution Hill until September 14.
