If you are a fan of gatherings that bring music, film, fashion, and design together, then you've probably heard of Joburg tastemaker Nandi Dlepu and her amazing work with creative agency Mamakashaka. If not, you need to know that Dlepu is behind some of the most exciting event series and pop-ups in this city, such as Pantone Sundays, Feel Good Series, and Bloom Org, a community for creative women. 

In 2024, the Mamakashaka agency HQ opened at 5 De Beer Street in Braamfontein, the former home of the iconic Great Dane bar. Walk through the grey wooden doors and you'll be met with the mantra: "Where creative friends meet, where creative friends are made". 

A cool and calming space that leads onto a private courtyard, all decked out in neutral tones, the venue opens on weekends for selected events, livening up as a social space with thoughtful and playful curation by Dlepu and her team, always in collaboration with Joburg's creative community, hence the Mamakashaka and Friends name. 

If you're looking for something to do on a Friday afternoon, head to Mamakashaka and Friends' Wine Down from 16:00. You can enjoy wine and hip-hop music, and start the weekend off on a good note. And every Sat from 13:00, Mamakashaka and Friends host a cool afternoon in Braamfontein with cocktails and curated playlists.

More of a bookworm? Then you'll love Bookish, Mamakashaka and Friends' monthly book event in Braamfontein with Joburg's best toastie makers, Toasted (sadly they closed their permanent space in Parkwood, but if you have been craving those crisp, cheesy, and delicious creations, this is now the place). The book event is totally informal. We loved it – just bring a book, or indulge in board games or a round of chess. It's a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning. It takes place on the first Sun of every month at 11:00 and you can enjoy a delicious toastie while catching up on your reading.
