Studio H still loves Joburg

Describing themselves as a “culinary-minded design team”, it was no wonder that the Studio H team sunk their teeth into Joburg’s culinary scene on an extended visit to the city two years ago (they shared the full list of their favourite Joburg food spots with The Sunday Times). Having returned to create The House of Suntory pop-up in Hyde Park Corner over March and April, the team has rediscovered old favourites and found new ones – and they share their latest list of favourite Studio H-approved food spots. It’s a list we approve of!

New restaurants and cafés in Joburg

ARTÜRO TEQUILA, MELVILLE
The Artüro team is ready to welcome you. Photo: Artüro via Instagram.

The brand-new kid on the Melville block is Artüro Tequila, the latest tequila and tapas bar on 7th Street serving up Afro and Latino flavours with a shot of tequila on the side (if that’s your kind of thing). A little birdie has told us that Artüro Fridays are happening with DJs on the decks. We hope to see you there soon.

THE CODFATHER, PARKTOWN NORTH
It's official – we've seen the sign. Popular seafood restaurant The Codfather is heading to Parktown North. We'll keep our eyes and ears open with news of the official opening.

THE LIBRARY CAFÉ, SANDTON
Some light reading and strong coffee at The Library Café. Photo: The Library Café via Instagram.

We’re sold on anything food and books related and love the look of The Library Café in Sandton. Opened in March 2024, it’s a spot specialising in breakfast, brunch, and lunch. The hook for us is the stocked bookshelf where you can grab a book to read over your cup of coffee or a meal. It sounds like a perfect place to escape, without having to give a reason for some me-time. We're adding it to our list of must-visit spots in Joburg.

NANDO’S, BARLOW PARK

There’s a new Nando’s casa in town – and it’s certainly not ordinary. This flagship Nando’s restaurant at the new Barlow Park in Sandton opened at the beginning of April 2024 and is one of four service restaurants in Gauteng where you can sit, order, and enjoy your meal. The food is as tasty as you’ve come to expect from Nando’s but the design elements are unique to this store, from an art-in-motion feature wall by Meshack “Shakes” Tembani to beautiful light displays created by Thabiso Mjo from Mash.T Design Studio. Pop in – it's a wonderful way of supporting local art and design.

SEC AT CLICO BOUTIQUE HOTEL, ROSEBANK
Chef Dario De Angeli's menu at Sec features small plates that reflect his sense of exploration. Photo: Supplied.

Chef Dario De Angeli (chef-owner of the award-winning Cube Tasting Kitchen and Est Est Alea) started reinventing both the space and the menus at Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank with the opening of 400 Degrees in 2023. Deciding it’s time to create a restaurant that’s separate from the hotel, De Angeli’s newest offering comes in the form of Sec. Located in the airy courtyard and elegant restaurant space to the side of the hotel, De Angeli’s approach to his new offering is to offer guests a dining experience that speaks to his dedication to authenticity and exploration. Expect a menu that features small plates and stars ingredients like venison and Namibian crab or tuck into the tried-and-trusted pizza offering.

TURKISH KEBAB HOUSE, ROSEBANK
Patrons of Turkish Kebab House and Butchery in Mayfair can look forward to a new chapter when the family-run restaurant opens at The Tyrwhitt in Rosebank in May 2024. We’re looking forward to getting a taste of the grilled meats, flatbreads, dips, and desserts we’ve come to love in a new setting.

Reviews to look out for

We’re always looking to share our food experiences with you and will soon be telling you about our visit to Glory since they opened at their permanent home on Parktown North’s 4th Avenue. We also visited MiHa, the elegant halaal restaurant on the Melrose Arch piazza, and the pan-African Ethnic Restaurant in Edenvale. We're loving the croissants from De Baba Eatery in Melville and are sniffing out the coolest spots in Joburg to enjoy a drink, so watch this space…
