My whole body changed into something else - group exhibition
Jul 15 - Aug 21 2021
46 7th Ave, Parktown North
The title of the exhibition is a quote from the artist, thinker and composer Sun Ra describing a moment of abduction and renewal and the exhibition takes as its unifying theme ideas of bodily existence and the processes of transformation.
The exhibition includes an array of works dating from 1950 to the present day by artists including Ernest Mancoba, Simon Gush, Penny Siopis, Moshekwa Langa, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi, Portia Zvavahera and Aziz Harara. Attending to the challenges presented by history, the dictates of commerce, the sensory borders between how matter is experienced, and the perceptions of binaries and opposition, the works on display speak to topics ranging from geopolitical conflicts to the tensions between humanity and the natural world.
