The latest short film series from The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Maboneng, one of South Africa's most innovative cross-disciplinary arts spaces, is Odd Portraits Of This Place curated by Phala O. Phala. Phala is a Botswana-born, and Joburg-based theatre-maker, director, writer, and dramaturg, and the 'Animateur' for The Centre for the Less Good Idea.

The five-part Odd Portraits of This Place series starts on Friday August 6 with a new film launched every Friday online. Each short film is shot in a different location in Gauteng, using film, sound and language to create a vibrant miniature piece that captures on film the interaction between space, the body and movement, as well as the inspirations that grow from the convergence of space and performance.

The first film in the series is titled Something Is Gone and is the story of a student dancer (Ziyabukwa Mankabane is a dance student at TUT and the conceptualiser of this performance) inspired by the music of a busking musician (musician and composer Bongile Lecoge-Zulu). Filmed at a busy junction in the Maboneng Precinct, both performers draw inspiration for the work from the sounds of the city streets. You can watch this first performance online below via the Centre for the Less Good Idea Youtube channel. And make a Friday date to follow this series (Subscribe to the Centre's YouTube channel for more).
