The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre hosts this moving film screening and music performance. The events at the Centre are always incredibly well thought-out and the work they do to make sure the worst aspects from our history are not repeated is ever relevant. This is a rare opportunity to see and reflect on the life and courageous actions of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg.

This screening of Gregor Nowinski's film Raoul Wallenberg's War will be accompanied by the exhibition To Me There's No Other Choice which looks at the life of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, and open with a special address from Holocaust survivor Irene Fainman, and live performances by pianist Musa Mdluli and vocalist Samantha LandersListen to the music of Musa Mdluli here.

The film focuses on Raoul Wallenberg during World War II. Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat and businessman who served as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest. While there he sheltered a number of Jewish people in buildings he declared as Swedish territory and issued protective passports so that they could shelter elsewhere. In 1945 he was detained by the Red Army on suspicion of espionage and disappeared after being sent to a prison in Lubyanka.

Many Hungarian Jewish people who managed to flee the Nazi occupation were able to do so because of Wallenberg's efforts and the film is an incredible detailing of the power of individual acts of resistance. It features accounts from people he saved and worked with. With archival footage from Hungary it not only tracks Wallenberg's actions but also tells the lesser-known story of Hungary's occupation during World War II. It is a film which will linger well after the credits have rolled.
