Red Chamber

Emma Chen opened Red Chamber in 1989, named after one of China's greatest novels. In a roomy restaurant in Hyde Park Corner (book a round table and spin the lazy susan), with tables spilling into the walkway (good for family meals as the kids get to run around in plain sight plus) the menu offers up a range of unforgettable Mandarin-style dishes striving for a harmony of tastes, textures and aromas.

Famous for spicy cucumber salad with chilli and garlic, Peking Duck and sizzling plates, just to name a few dishes, this is one restaurant worth heading to a shopping centre for. The service is efficient and the restaurant has a no MSG policy.

Emma Chen also has a second Joburg restaurant, the casual noodle spot People's Republic of Noodles (PRON) in Linden, where she serves up a simple menu of classic northern Chinese noodle bowls and other typically northern Chinese small plates such as handbreak bread.
