Saturday Feb 24 20:30

Inspired by Sankofa, the mythical Ghanaian bird which has come to represent the return of the African diaspora, American saxophonist and activist Salim Washington takes to The Orbit stage with his band Sankofa this February.

The Tennessee-born saxophonist's musical style is eclectic; influenced by master composers like Andrew Hill and Stevie Wonder, Washington also credits artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Mankunku Ngozi as inspirations. Washington and Sankofa will be performing original compositions and homages to other revolutionary composers, with a jazz style that aims to “contemplate the state of life and culture in South Africa, while supporting pan-African consciousness”.
