Sam Nhlengethwa is one of South Africa's most celebrated contemporary artists and his distinctive collage style is immediately recognisable. Nhlengethwa typically takes the people and places of the modern African cityscape as his subjects and in this new exhibition he has chosen to spotlight five key moments in South Africa's recent history.<br />

In lithographic prints, linocuts, mixed media collages and tapestry, Nhlengethwa captures the energy and lasting impact of pivotal cultural and political moments such as the first democratic election in 1994 and the Soweto uprising of 1976, as well as the legacy of leaders and activists such as Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. By looking to the past and relating its effects to the present, Nhlengethwa challenges his viewers to question and examine the actions taken in the construction of democracy and highlights the importance of citizen activism.
