One of South Africa's most prestigious prizes for emerging artists, Sasol New Signatures is also one of the longest-running art competitions of its kind. This year's Sasol New Signatures winners were announced on November 10 at the Pretoria Art Museum, where the works of all of the 2021 finalists are on display until January 9, 2022.

The top prize this year went to artist Andrea Du Plessis for a work that brings together fine art painting and augmented reality technology, while runner-up Dalli Weyers created his winning work from plastic bags. Five Merit Award winners were also chosen, working in a range of mediums that include photography, sculpture, embroidery and even snakeskin.

Together the works bring together interesting social commentary, in a wide range of mediums that span traditional art making and its future. If you are on the hunt for exciting new names on the South African contemporary art scene, the Sasol New Signatures finalists are definitely ones to watch.

*The Pretoria Art Museum is located at Cnr Francis Baard and Wessels Sts, Arcadia Park, Pretoria. Open 10:00-17:00, closed Mon and public holidays. Entrance to the museum costs R25 and can be paid in cash only.
