Johannesburg

Joburg's original speakeasy mixologist-led cocktail bar, the award-winning Sin+Tax, has undergone a major transformation in 2021. While South Africa suffered under a long stint of actual prohibition in 2020, the idea of a 'secret' backroom bar seating only a handful and with an entrance hidden behind a wall or inside a cupboard – became a bit too cramped for these Covid times.

The new look Sin & Tax is less speakeasy and more cocktail yard, opening out into its own courtyard (hidden in a graffiti-strewn alley between Park Corner and the car park at the corner of Bolton Road). That said, it is still pretty tricky to get in here and if you arrive late and it's full (often the case on weekends) you will be turned away. Our advice is to dress up, and arrive before sunset. It's worth it!

At the bar is Julian Short, a legend of mixing whose fresh looks belie his years of experience. He's also a charmer. A great drink accompaniment. Sin + Tax serves some of the most exciting and exclusive drinks in town and the themed menu changes with the seasons, meaning this is still a must-visit venue for mixology fans. If you spot it on that season's menu, make sure to try one of the imaginative twists on the classic Negroni. You'll have no regrets.
