The collection of new and previously exhibited work of Fred Clarke spans over a decade of the artist's explorations. The result is an exhibition that is at once varied while being rooted in an evolving language of marks, symbols, and messages, with the artist exploring themes of technology, biology, and psychedelia, and the strange ways these intersect and shape each other.
An allusion to the year Clarke was born, the title Windows 86 points to the rapidly condensed evolution of technology, and by extension, the world. Clarke forgoes nostalgia as he looks backward, and the works question what an underpinning human nature might look like in a world of flux. With it, Clarke engages the complex and contrasting narratives that humanity navigates on a daily basis, and the impact that these have on our lives.
See the shifting works of Windows 86 for yourself at W17 Gallery, located in Workshop 17, The Bank, from Thu, Nov 6, 2025 until mid Jan, 2026. The exhibition will be opened by Professor David Andrew from the University of the Witwatersrand.
