At South African auction house Stephan Welz & Co's latest live auction there are a number of rare paintings by leading artists on sale including an exquisite 1924 painting by the South African landscape painter JH Pierneef titled Magaliesburg (estimate from R.15million) which has never been seen at auction before, and an elegant early 20th Century painting of the Cape Town suburbs, Bantry Bay by Maud Sumner (estimate R150,000).
Three distinctive paintings by the always intriguing Alexis Preller (1911–1975) also feature in the auction. Forming part of the artist's private collection, the paintings were given to one of Preller's close friends and proteges, the young Guna Massyn, who was Preller's sole heir and offer rare insights into the artist’s personal life.
Other highlights of the auction include five paintings by the Cape impressionist Pieter Wenning (1873–1921), paintings of scenes from the Cape captured by Nita Spillhaus (1878-1967) and Pieter Hugo Naudé (1868-1941), landscapes by Piet van Heerden (1917-1991) and Gregoire Boonzaier (1909–2005) and John Koenakeefe Mohl's (1903-1985) distinctive depictions of historic Sophiatown in Joburg and the beaches of Durban.
