Still Here - a solo exhibition by Ronél de Jager at Kalashnikovv
“Still Here” is a bold, vibrant and ethereal exhibition by by Ronél de Jager. This solo exhibition at Kalashnikovv Gallery in Braamfontein features the artist’s latest body of work – paintings, prints, and a beaded artwork made in collaboration with Qaqambile Bead Studio.

"We are Still Here, but what does it mean to be here? In the same way that De Jager’s work loses elements in shifting between digital and physical, Still Here asks, what do we lose when we are constantly translating ourselves between online and offline?"

De Jager contemplates the disappearing boundaries between real and not real and the consequent effects on our personal relationships and our relationships with ourselves. In this body of work she integrates digital tools into her painting practice and remasters the Vanitas style from the 17th and 18th-century Dutch masters. She takes apart the pixelated life with a sensitivity that makes it poetic. Vanitas refers to traditional, symbolic, still-life paintings that remind us of the pleasures of life and the certainty of death.

This art exhibition reinforces the idea that nothing is the same as it was, or as it will ever be again. The artist does this thematically in her brightly coloured, large-scale paintings that give a sense of constant movement that alludes to a process of change.
