Structures forms the second part of Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation's (JCAF) Worldmaking series. The exhibition sees the featured artists and team at JCAF explore the relations between humans and the built environment. JCAF's exhibitions stand out not only for the works on display but also for their focus on knowledge building, with their guided tours offering a space of reflection and learning. Structures promises to continue this as they delve into the themes of situatedness, infrastructure, and typologies.

The featured works include a city made from cous cous, the South African Pavilion of the 2024 Venice Biennale on home soil, an interactive installation by a women-led architectural collective, portrayals of light from Tunisia, and a Brazilian installation from the 1970s.

JCAF's Worldmaking series is their second research theme, looking at the way that we collectively make and shape the spaces around us. The first exhibition, Ecospheres explored questions of how we live with the environment and natural world. Accompanying these exhibitions are a series of talks and publications; read up on their podcast series here.

Structures runs at JCAF from Sat, May 31 – Sat, Nov 15. Free admission; booking essential. RSVP for a walkabout here
