We Still Insist is a film project and live performance presented by The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember and What’s Wrong With Groovin’? on Thu, Sep 22 at 19:00 at Constitution Hill.

Artist Kudzanai Chiurai presents the film that will be accompanied by a live performance by Tumi Mogorosi and The Freedom Now Suite Band.

Speaking on the event Chiurai says, "This will be a presentation of a visual and audio archive installation that speaks to the history of oppression, resistance and liberation throughout Africa in the latter half of the 20th century. The collaboration with What’s Wrong With Groovin’? seeks to bring the past into the present, as our present is still shaped by our colonial history. The collaboration also evokes the traditions of resistance, solidarity and collaboration that are synonymous with the album We Insist, Freedom Now Suite. This rendition will be titled We Still Insist – as a continuation to the album's call to resistance, solidarity and collaboration."

For this performance Tumi Mogorosi and The Freedom Now Suite Band have readapted Max Roach's We Still Insist, an avant-garde jazz album and a vocal-instrumental suite exploring themes related to the Civil Rights Movement. The performance will be accompanied by an audio and visual installation by internationally renowned artist Kudzanai Chiurai. Central to Chiurai's work are themes of solidarity, resistance and collaboration as he explores what it means to live in African metropoles.

The Freedom Now Suite consists of some of South Africa's brightest jazz musicians including Tumi Mogorosi, Gabi Motuba, Dalisu Ndlazi, DJKenzhero, Malcolm Jiyane, Ndabo Zulu, Ofenste Sebula, Gontse Makhene, Robin Fassie and together with Chiurai they have created a beautiful and powerful continuation of the work of Max Roach. Their performance readapts his work and reposes the questions to which he was seeking answers.

We Still Insist will be performed for one night only. Tickets are R400 and must be booked online. No sales at the door.
