August is Women's Month in South Africa and The Orbit jazz club, which hosts jazz concerts six nights a week, is marking the occassion with a bumper line-up of female jazz acts this month. Concerts to look out for include:<br /> <br /> <strong>Sat Aug 5 at 20:30, Tu Nokwe</strong><br /> Veteran jazz singer and guitarist Tu Nokwe is praised for her unique jazz-infused chanteuse style. Nokwe often sings in her native tongue Zulu, and her lyrics celebrate women, spreading a message of happiness and positivity.<br /> <br /> <strong>Wed Aug 9 at 20:00, Womens’ Day Celebration </strong><br /> This special Women's Day concert at The Orbit jazz club honours one of South Africa’s most renowned female musicians, the late Busi Mhlongo. Mhlongo’s musical style was a melting pot of South African influences ranging from maskandi and marabi to rock and the trio of female vocalists - Zoë Modiga, Titi Luzipo and Spha Mdlalose, accompanied by bass, drums, piano and guitar - promise to pay tribute to Mhlongo's unforgettable jazz legacy.<br /> <br /> <strong>Fri Aug 11 at 20:30, Nomfundo Xaluva </strong><br /> Sultry jazz singer and pianist Nomfundo Xaluva presents an evening of music inspired by 'the wonder that is woman' drawing on songs that pay tribute to the female musicians that she admires the most.<br /> <br /> <strong>Sat Aug 12 at 20:30, Omagugu Makhathini: Chakula Cha Roho</strong><br /> Jazz vocalist Omagugu Makhathini presents Chakula Cha Roho (meaning ‘food for the soul’ in KiSwahili) a performance dedicated to her dear mother. In invoking her mother’s spirit, Omagugu seeks to transport the audience on a journey of love and freedom through some older and new compositions.<br /> <br /> <strong>Thu Aug 17 at 20:30, Ziza Muftic </strong><br /> Croatian-born jazz singer Ziza Muftic is joined on stage by celebrated South African jazz pianist Paul Hanmer, bass player Romy Brauteseth and drummer Peter Auret.<br /> <br /> <strong>Sat Aug 26 at 20:30, Titi Luzipo – Revisiting MaZi</strong><br /> Trailblazing young South African vocalist Titi Luzipo revisits the music of the jazz icon Miriam Makeba, fondly known as Mama Africa or MaZi. Paging through MaZi’s songbook, Titi has unearthed some of the singer's lesser-known songs which she'll be performing at this special concert, including tracks from Makeba's last album<em> Homeland</em>.<br /> <br /> <strong>Wed Aug 30 at 20:00, Spha Mdlalose: Voices I’ve Loved</strong><br /> Jazz and soul singer Spha Mdlalose celebrates the music that she grew up listening to and which inspired her to find a career as a vocalist include icons like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Brenda Fassie and Sibongile Khumalo.
