The Jan Matejko House is proud to present two recently acquired and restored works by the 19th-century master, alongside a display of his drawings. The impressive ‘Portrait of Prof. Dr. Karol Gilewski’ depicts its subject - a doctor, activist, the director of forensic medicine in Kraków, and later the director of Jagiellonian University Hospital - with his dean’s necklace on and a medical book in his hands. Last mentioned in a 1915 catalogue, the whereabouts of the painting was unknown until it suddenly appeared on auction in Vienna in October 2015. Similarly, the ‘Portrait of Szymon Darowski’ - a friend of Matejko’s - was in the artist’s own possession at the time of his death and passed down through the family until trace of it was lost in 1946. This mystery was solved when the owner for the last 50 years decided to auction the work in June 2016.
