Comedy is a key pillar of Piwnica Pod Baranami’s legendary history. Created by Piotr Skrzynecki in 1956, the Pod Baranami Cabaret was the most renowned artistic comedy group of the PRL-era, lampooning the communist regime through song, dance and sketch comedy while offering audiences a "breath of freedom' and an ironic distance to the reality that surrounded them. Despite the 1997 death of Skrzynecki - hard-drinking eccentric and founder of the bar, the cabaret, and the general aesthetic and atmosphere of the entire place - the cabaret is still going strong, and as popular as ever some sixty years since its inception. Many of Poland's most famous talents have taken this intimate stage in the corner of the Pod Baranami cellars. Reserve your seat early in the night and enjoy the satirical lyricism of contemporary Polish artists old and young; unfortunately the performances are only in Polish.
