Dating back to 1887, this regal, olde world cafe/restaurant inside the Grand Hotel was a favourite haunt of famous local artists; among them Jacek Malczewski, Leon Wyczolkowski, Teodor Axentowicz, Feliks Jasieński and other icons of Kraków's Art Nouveau movement, memorabilia from which can be found framed on the walls, in addition to some sculptures. Hardly changed to this day, the Grand continues its scholarly reputation with regular weekly meetings of the city's professors, while the restaurant serves traditional Polish and European cuisine in the spirit of the pre-war aristocracy. More down-to-earth guests are also welcome inside the sumptuous setting to indulge in a bit of cake and ice cream, or a snifter of bourbon in the adjoining bar. A good option for a bit of peace and quiet away from the babbling hordes outside, the Grand opens at 07:00 as a cafe, but the kitchen doesn't serve until 13:00.
