Juliusz Leo Monument

  ul. Nadwiślańska 1 ,   Podgórze         22 May 2023
Juliusz Leo was a Polish politician and academic from Kraków while the city was part of the Austrian Empire, then Austria-Hungary. Leo was Kraków's first deputy mayor from 1901 to 1904, then mayor from 1904 for three terms until his death. Today's Kraków owes a lot to Julisz Leo - thanks to his planning concept there was an eightfold increase in the size of what had previously been the most crowded city in Galicia. The city's expansion meant absorbing many of the small towns surrounding Kraków, which today we simply think of as districts: Zwierzyniec, Krowodrza, Prądnik Czerwony, Prądnik Biały, Grzegórzki, Dąbie, Płaszów, and Podgórze. He is also credited with the extensive improvement of the city's infrastructure. This monument was installed in 2018 and features Leo with his stern glare and outsized mustache presiding over a map of Kraków. Local residents would probably gladly trade him for a tree, but he's here to stay.
