M-City Liberator Mural

ul. Zabłocie 27 ,   Podgórze         more than a year ago
This mural by the amazing Mariusz Waras, aka M-City, was created in 2021 as part of the '100 Murals for Kraków' project. Like another mural on ul. Dąbrowskiego, it pays homage to the fate of RAF B-24 Liberator KG933, which was shot down over Zabłocie on August 17, 1944 after completing a successful supply drop over the Polish capital to aid the Allied combatants of the Warsaw Uprising. The Allied mission had only one survivor, Australian Flight Lieutenant Allan Hammet, who managed to eject and reach safety and joined the Home Army, participating in several armed actions. He eventually rejoined his unti and survived the war, married a Polish woman and had two sons.

This mural, which stands near almost the exact spot where components of the downed impacted several warehouses, combines Zabłocie's industrial heritage with the history of the Liberator and elements of fantasy and surrealism. Another large mural by M-City can be seen on ul. Krupnicza.
