This major exhibit at the main branch of the National Museum celebrates the legacy of iconic 19th-century Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838-1893). Arguably Poland's most famous painter, his grand historical canvases are known to every Polish school child and his accounting of historical events through his images has become part of Polish national consciousness. Displaying an impressive collection of his masterpieces, this impressive exhibit highlights how Matejko skillfully blended history with artistic expression, capturing pivotal moments in Polish history with a blend of realism and emotive storytelling. Visitors are taken on a captivating journey through time, gaining insights into the artist's visionary mind and experiencing the nation's past through a vibrant, visually stimulating narrative. The exhibition will also bring light to Matejko’s social activism, presenting numerous certificates of gratitude and recognition addressed to him. On display are more than 300 works from the collection of the National Museum, as well as private and foreign collections.
