This exhibition explores the work of Toyen (Marie Čermínová, 1902–1980), one of the most fascinating and unconventional figures of European Surrealism. Rejecting traditional gender roles and social expectations, the Czech artist adopted the pseudonym Toyen and developed a bold artistic language that explored eroticism, desire and the unconscious. Together with Jindřich Štyrský she helped shape Czech Surrealism, creating provocative works that challenged conventional representations of the body and sexuality. The exhibition presents a wide selection of illustrated books, graphics, catalogues and posters, revealing how Toyen used art as a form of personal freedom and resistance—particularly during the rise of fascism in Europe.
