This major exhibit at the main branch of the Kraków National Museum presents the oeuvre of one of Scandinavia's most intriguing painters, Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). Regarded as the most important Danish artist of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Hammershøi was a painter of pauses, silences and the spaces 'in between.' In addition to the artist's most representative paintings and drawings, which have been selected in cooperation with some of the most important art collections in Northern Europe, the exhibit also includes archival photographs related to his life and work; photography was an important medium for Hammershøi, allowing him to experiment with framing and light - two elements essential to his work. Hammershøi's narratively restrained, colourfully refined, contemplative art conceals subtle content relating to the everyday life of the painter and his loved ones. Its multifaceted nature also encompasses a whole range of timeless, intimate emotions invariably inscribed in human existence, including a sense of loneliness, alienation and a desire to take refuge from a disturbing reality.
