Stična Monastery

The monastery dates back to 1136 and was built by the ten patriarch of Aquilea, Peregrin I. Located in the village of Stična it is home to the Slovenian Museum of Religion and is perhaps best known for the collection of medieval manuscripts written by Cistercian monks, 'Stična Manuscripts'.

The museum follows an over 1,700-year-old religious tradition in the area of Slovenia. Christianity has created an exceptional material and spiritual legacy over the centuries, which acquires new dimensions within the museum's activities. On the one hand, the museum presents various collections of movable sacral cultural heritage, and on the other, it provides a historical overview of social currents in which Christianity played an important role. The museum communicates with the public through exhibitions, publications and various events, because it is aware that Christianity is not only part of the historical context, but also has its place in modern society.
