On the first Saturday of May each year, rail buffs travel from near and far for the Wolsztyn Steam Parade - a pageant of functioning antique steam locomotives from across Europe. Organised since 1993, this incredibly unique event is centred around the historic Wolsztyn Roundhouse - a working steam depot that also includes indoor and open-air exhibits, including many historic train carriages on display. But this isn't just a heritage site - it's literally the last place in the world with regular steam-powered passenger services, and the Steam Parade is its biggest annual event, drawing tens of thousands of spectators to see a spectacular lineup of working steam locomotives, enjoy retro train rides, talks, demonstrations, food and beer tents and a range of family-friendly attractions. For rail enthusiasts, Wolsztyn is literally the top of the bucket list, and this weekend in May is the most exciting time to visit. Find more info on their website and FB page.

Also note that Wolsztyn Steam Depot operates year-round, with regular passenger service to and from Poznań. As such, visitors to Poznań have the opportunity to if not ride, then at the very least see and experience what it's like when a powerful antique steam locomotive pulls into Poznań Train Station, which they typically do on Saturdays. Find the latest schedule of steam train services online.
