A Decade of the Night March in Zagreb

24 Feb 2026

As part of the observance of International Women’s Day, Zagreb will mark the 10th edition of the Night March (Noćni marš) on March 8. The annual event is organized by the feminist collective fAKTIV and has, over the past decade, become one of the most visible public gatherings dedicated to women’s rights and gender equality in Croatia.

This year’s anniversary edition will take place under the slogan “Women – the Backbone of Resistance” (Žene – kičma otpora). The slogan positions women as central actors in social and political resistance, continuing the march’s tradition of linking International Women’s Day with contemporary social issues.
Since its launch in 2016, the Night March has been held in the evening hours to underscore women’s right to safety, visibility and equal participation in public space. What began as a grassroots initiative has developed into a recurring civic event that draws participants from Zagreb and other Croatian cities.
Over the years, the march has addressed a broad range of issues, including economic inequality, labour rights, reproductive rights, access to public healthcare and protection from gender-based violence. Organizers frame the event not only as a commemoration of historical struggles for women’s rights, but also as a platform for articulating current social and political demands.

The 10th edition marks a milestone for the initiative. A decade after the first Night March was held, the event has established itself as a consistent part of Zagreb’s civic calendar and a recognizable way of marking International Women’s Day in Croatia. Similar marches have also been organized in other cities, reflecting the wider resonance of the initiative.
The march on March 8 will begin at 18:00 in front of the Croatian National Theatre (HNK). The confirmed route is: HNK – Frankopanska – Ilica – Praška – Zrinjevac. The march will proceed through central Zagreb and conclude at Zrinjevac Park, where organizers traditionally hold speeches and public addresses.
Taking place along some of the city’s main streets and squares, the event offers insight into how Zagreb marks International Women’s Day through organized civic participation in its historic centre.
