Known as the ‘Shepherd Cycle’, this series of twenty-four oil based paintings derive from the Homeland War in the 90’s, particularly in the city of Knin and the devastation of churches and sacral artefacts. The inspiration is in particular from a burned, drilled and uncapped statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the destroyed Church of St. Anthony. Through shade, light and colourist accents, Šebalj refers to Christ’s sufferings, the painful woundsand humiliation endured, as did the victims of war too.
