In the rich wine-producing hills around Zagreb, on St Martin’s Day the grape must is “baptised” and turned into wine in a jovial ceremony with all the trappings of a real baptism. On this day, roast goose is eaten since according to legend St Martin hid in a stable filled with geese when he was proclaimed bishop. Martinje is celebrated in many towns and villages around Zagreb, particularly in the hillside wine cellars around Dugo Selo.
