The National Museum's Old Art Department in Gdańsk is a treasure trove of historical art located in a former Franciscan monastery. The stunning architecture of the museum is a work of art in itself, with vaulted ceilings and an impressive staircase leading visitors to an impressive collection of art.

One of the most significant works of art in Poland, Hans Memling's highly detailed triptych 'The Final Judgment' is the main attraction of the museum's Historical Art Department. The collection also includes Flemish and Dutch paintings from the 15th to the 17th century, including works by Peter Bruegel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and many more. The department also has a vast collection of drawings and prints representing European schools of art from the late 15th to the 19th century, including prints by Dürer and Rembrandt.

In addition to its impressive painting and print collections, the museum also showcases 265 works from the 16th to the early 20th century, representing the most important trends and artists in historical Gdańsk art. The collection includes works by Hans Vredeman de Vries, Daniel Schultz, Anton Möller, and Andreas Stech. Visitors can also admire an impressive collection of Gdańsk and Northern European furniture, artistic tin, iron, gold, silver, and bell-foundry artifacts, as well as copper and brass objects. The museum's ensemble of fabrics and embroideries includes historical textiles from the 13th to the 20th century, such as Eastern cloths, tapestries, liturgical paraments from Gdańsk and Pomeranian churches, clothing and fashion accessories, and lace.

Currently, the department is presenting two exhibitions entitled "The pious and virtuous. Gdańsk citizens of the past in the mirror of art" and "Precisely! Portrait of a Young Woman from Warmia".
