This exhibit offers a review of the industrial, architectural and social landscapes of the city, which was reborn after World War II. With its flourishing shipyard industry and newly built modern architecture, the black and white world of Gdańsk presented in these photographs showcases the city's extraordinary development, while simultaneously recalling the unique character of times past. The power of these works lies in the photographers' genuine connection to the Tricity area, which enabled them to capture the everyday spirit of the seaside. They recorded modern architecture against shipyard landscapes, along with people working or simply enjoying the charms of the city. Interestingly, the buildings, ports, and recreation areas which were seen as cutting-edge nearly 60 years ago now make up a part of Tricity's history, and are mostly unrecognisable from what they once were. As such, the exhibition brings to mind a reflection on predictions and unfulfilled expectations. Did the enthusiasm for modernity, which was increased by the socialist propaganda of the 60s, bear consequences on the artists' works? In uniquely framed (sometimes bordering on slightly perverse) images, the photographs provide contrast to the local reality against the backdrop of the developing metropolitan area.
