Historical Gate #2 of the Gdansk Shipyard

ul. Doki 1, Gdańsk ,   No District         12 Dec 2018
The #2 gate of the Gdansk Shipyards is where Lech Walesa stood to announce to the waiting crowds the deal that had been struck with the Communist government in 1980. The image of the gate decked in flowers and images of Pope John Paul II is one of the most enduring of that era and the gate has since been listed as an historical monument. Even today you’ll still see flowers placed here alongside the picture of the Pope. The gate was the scene of clashes in 2012 when the Lenin Shipyard name was put back over the entrance as part of the making of Andrzej Wajda’s film ‘Walesa’, when protestors covered it in red paint.
