Before the season began Zdunek Wybrzeze Gdansk and Grupa Azoty Unia Tarnow were widely tipped to be slugging it out for the one automatic promotion place. The two teams results during the regular season proved these predictions to be accurate and at the end of the regular season Tarnow were top with Gdansk in second place. In the regular season fixtures, both sides won their respective home fixture with Gdansk triumphing 32-28 at home and losing 37-53 in the south of Poland.
Regular season form and results count for nothing now however. The two teams face off over two-legs with the winner claiming the automatic promotion spot. The loser will have to face off against the team which finished seventh in the Ekstraliga for the one remaining spot in next season’s Ekstraliga.
