One of Joburg's annual cultural highlights, FNB Art Joburg brings crowds of art lovers together for an excellent lineup of art from Africa and the global diaspora. Last year, highlights included MADEYOULOOK's installation Dinokana from the Venice Biennale (if you missed it you can see their work at Structures at Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation), works by Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi that were thought to be lost for 32 years, and a collection of films by Penny Siopis, which highlighted her versatile creativity and storytelling.
We can't wait to see what they bring to the fair this year. With seven specialised sections, the range of works on display is sure to satisfy everyone's tastes: From curated booths by prominent galleries, publications by studios and publishing houses, and larger-than-life installations, to an incubator for tomorrow's leaders in art, a dedicated space for photography and film, and thought-provoking talks. With all that's on offer, you might need more than one visit to soak it all in.
In addition to the three-day fair, Open City is FNB Art Joburg's initiative to spotlight independent and emerging cultural practitioners. This year, the Open City programme of free and ticketed events runs from Thu, Aug 28 – Thu , Sep 11. You can find some of the highlights here. Plus, on Sat, Aug 30, the third volume of the BMW Art Generation takes place at NIROX Sculpture Park with the theme A Tropology Between Image and Imagination exploring the narrative power of creative practice.
