Global luxury and homegrown icons at Mall of Africa – a shopping guide

29 Apr 2025
If retail therapy is your love language, the Mall of Africa in Midrand is your happy place – it's one of the biggest shopping malls in South Africa with 300 stores spread across 130,000 square metres. Crowned "Coolest Mall" for the seventh year running by the Sunday Times Generation Next Awards, this retail giant boasts a mix of global luxury with brands like Diesel, BOSS, and Superdry alongside homegrown icons like Maxhosa AFRICA and Era by DJ Zinhle. We explored the Mall of Africa and created a guide to help you navigate what's on offer. You'll want to clear your schedule for this; it's the ultimate shopping day out.

1. BATHU
The Journey 2.0s in black and white at Bathu. Photo: Johannesburg In Your Pocket.

Bathu is a proudly South African footwear brand known for its bold, colourful designs and signature mesh sneakers that celebrate local culture and street style. It was founded in 2015 by Theo Baloyi, who left his corporate job to build an authentic African sneaker brand. After 18 months of development and multiple rejections from manufacturers, he launched the Mesh Edition sneakers – starting with just 100 pairs sold from a small room in Alexandra, Joburg. It's grown exponentially, boasting 35 stores nationwide (Apr 2025).

Our pick: We love Bathu's Journey 2.0 shoes in black and white that resemble the famous Nike Dunks, but at a much better price point.
Where to find Bathu: On the top level of the Mall of Africa, shop 2201.
