Set opposite the longstanding Mozambican restaurant,  Xai Xai, on Melville’s ever-busy 7th Street, Good Omens is made for long, social evenings. 

After the success of Bad Manors, the lively Newtown nightlife spot known for its late-night crowds and music, entrepreneur and property developer Chris van den Berg figured his next venture might need a little extra luck. Enter Good Omens, a Melville bar and restaurant opened with hospitality aficionado Jonathan “Georgie” Michael, whose résumé includes stints at Lucio’s and launching Joburg favourites like A Streetbar Named Desire, Proud Mary, Mamasamba, and nearby Karaoke Kong.

There’s plenty of outdoor space that spills onto the street (with security), perfect for people-watching and socialising. It slots seamlessly into the Melville milieu, as if it’s been there for years, and includes a courtyard and a secret beer garden. Inside, chequered floors, burgundy walls, and bookshelves lend an old-school charm that may feel familiar to anyone who’s spent time at Bad Manors, while a dancefloor and a hidden room concealed behind what looks like an ordinary bookshelf add a fun surprise.

The soundtrack leans towards house, but it’s a little more laid-back than its Newtown sibling. That makes Good Omens an ideal spot to start your night before heading to its louder, clubbier big sister, Bad Manors, which stays open much later, or simply the kind of place where you can settle in and let the evening unfold. Pair that with an easygoing menu of burgers and boerewors rolls, a tight but thoughtful wine list, and cocktails – including rotating monthly signatures – to keep things interesting. Throw in a small deli section and a cereal bar, and the omens for a good evening look pretty promising.
