Designed by artists Khensani Jurczok-de Klerk, Tshego Mako, Aude Tollo, Tapiwa Manase, and Ann Kern, Building Africa: The State of Things at Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank (an extension of Decorex Joburg Design Week in Sandton) this exhibition demonstrates what it means to "restore, preserve, foreground, call upon, remember and project former and future conditions of socio-political identity through the architecture of buildings that were once central figures in the political agenda of South Africa".
It was made in response to a request from SOAS University of London for an exhibition titled "Building Africa: An African State Architecture" about South Africa's history which looked at how its future could be improved through architecture using research on the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein and Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The exhibition is accompanied by a variety of discussions and programming that will continue at Decorex, which will be held in August 2023, with the goal of igniting conversations about the state of our nation and how we start to rewrite the significance of these structures.
