Artists Nina Barnett and Jeremy Bolen explore the relationship between breathing and Johannesburg. The result is an exhibition that is sensory and immersive, and it provides a compelling front for their more scientific explorations on the effects of particles in the air on our bodies. With this exhibition at the Adler Museum at Wits Medical School campus in Parktown they approach the question of what impact dust and other pollutants have on the human body from a unique angle and focus on what these processes of change mean to those living in the city.

For On breathing Barnett and Bolen have dug into the Adler Museum archives for old medical equipment and combined these with artefacts from Joburg to create a variety of sculptures. By doing so they seek to displace these objects while also linking their forms to Johannesburg and its air.

The exhibit comes at a time when we are far more aware of what we are breathing in, and what this will do to us. Covid-19 gave us an awareness of breath that still powerfully lingers. By presenting Barnett and Bolen’s work the Adler Museum hopes to both add to these questions while also shedding light on the impact of what we breathe in has on us. A thought-provoking and relevant exhibition.

On breathing opens on Wed, Sep 7 with an opening event from 14:00–16:00.
There will be an artist walkabout on Sat, Sep 10 at 10:00.
