One of the highlights of South Africa’s live music calendar, the Red Bull Music festival returns for an extended weekend of music from some of the country's’s hottest musicians, taking place in various venues around Joburg including in Newtown, Braamfontein and Soweto. 

Wed Mar 4  
The festival kicks off at leading jazz club The Orbit with a night of improvised jazz including performances by Benjamin Jephta and Luyanda Madope followed by local favourite DJs including DJ Okapi. Tickets R100.

Thu Mar 5
Newtown Music Factory (the club that now occupies the old Bassline venue in Newtown) celebrates Joburg’s longest-running reggae night Ragga Thursdays. Hosted by the African Storm Sound System, the Thursday Ragga Nights brings the best of dancehall, ragga and roots-reggae with DJs like Mad Mugo and the Dancehall Queens on the lineup. Tickets R120.
 
Fri Mar 6
The Red Bull Music Festival takes over Braamfontein and Newtown on Friday with four venues offering four different experiences. In Braamfontein The Republic of 94 revisits South Africa’s kwaito heydays with DJ Tira and Oskido while Kitcheners celebrates South Africa’s millennial party music with genres like gqom, electronica and future beats on the program. Also in Braamfontein Great Dane brings turn-up hip hop, future bounce and old-school party music to the table while And Club presents Joburg’s leading electronica and techno club night TOYTOY. Tickets R80-R100.

Sat Mar 7
At the headline Red Bull Music Festival party at Fox Junction, legendary Mozambican dub group 340million (formerly known as 340ml) takes to the stage for their first performance in over five years, while a second dancefloor hosts DJs like American musician and producer Egyptian Lover on the decks. Tickets R350.

Sun Mar 8
The Red Bull Music Festival wraps up with a bang at one of Soweto’s most popular clubs Zone 6. The music landscape is proudly South African with deep-house, gqom and even maskandi on the program. The line-up includes hugely popular gqom group Distruction Boyz, dance musician Moonchild Sanelly, SAMA-award-winning rapper AKA and emerging female MC Sho Madjozi. Tickets R100.
