11 best places to go dancing in Johannesburg: Top nightlife spots, clubs and bars in Joburg

27 Apr 2026
Joburg’s dance scene is constantly shifting, and this is your guide to 11 best places to catch a night out on the dancefloor.

Joburg’s dance culture is steadily changing around us, with increasing numbers of people opting to be in bed before midnight. And while we understand that, dancing is still one of the best ways to shake off a stressful week, or bring in some joyous connection with a stranger or two. Let this be your call to action for a good old-fashioned boogie: from the gritty club classics, to boujee VIP experiences, to chiller jazz bars and everything else in between. This is our quick guide to 11 best places to go dancing in Joburg.

Club classics in the inner city

For the classic, slightly edgy club experience, Joburg kindly offers us Gwigwi Mrwebi Street in Newtown, a street synonymous with the ultra-cool inner-city club scene, complete with pounding techno and drum & bass.

1. And Club

A nondescript doorway and gritty inner-city location hide one of the country’s leading house, techno and drum & bass clubs: And Club is home to underground parties like ADDICTSHUN on Thursdays and TOYTOY on Fridays, and a space for the best local and international DJs.

2. Carfax

A legendary underground club and events space, Carfax is a vast old warehouse reimagined. The club hosts music festivals with a focus on alternative and underground music, and during festivals the adjoining streets are closed off to form an indoor-outdoor space with many stages.

3. Club A.M.

Club AM is a magnet for pop-up events, hosting cult-followed dance-centred events like Movement is Medicine, Ebumnandin, Raving in Johannesburg, VNJ BALL, The Breakfast Club, Love2Love, The Listening Party and more.

Fancy clubbing in the north

If you're looking for more luxe and less grit, the north of Joburg has that too:

4. Booth Night Club (Sandton)

If you’re after opulence, Booth Night Club in Sandown is the flashiest place to dance: complete with bottle girls, VIP booth experiences, and regular B.O.A.T (Booth On A Tuesday), with everything from amapiano to R&B to afrobeats.

5. Louis (Rosebank)

7. Good Omens (Melville)

A surprise dancefloor concealed behind what looks like an ordinary bookshelf awaits at Good Omens. Photo via Instagram.
The soundtrack at Good Omens leans towards house, but it’s a little more relaxed than its Newtown sibling Bad Manors, making it a great place to start your night before getting louder, or enjoying a slightly less frenzied vibe.

8. Katzy’s (Rosebank)

9. Mamakashaka and Friends (Braamfontein)

A cool and calming space that leads onto a private courtyard, Mamakashaka and Friends opens on weekends for selected events, like vinyl sets, listening parties and sunset solos, always in collaboration with Joburg's creative community.

10. Native Rebels (Soweto)

Smoking Kills is the mecca of punk princesses and dive bar connoisseurs. The bar earns their place on this list with their mix of drag and DJ nights like self-proclaimed “it-girl factory” Heaven, and daytime drum & bass events like Unseen. Their chock-full rotation of punk bands such as L.O.C and Twenty One Children delivers the soundtrack for an energetic mosh-pit.

Have your own dance party at home!

As we’ve kept an eye on this changing rhythm of partying, the city’s DJs and selectors are still finding plenty of ways to keep people moving. We asked a few of our favourites a simple question: which songs never fail to pull Joburg onto the dancefloor? P.S. Listen to the playlist on Youtube
