Driving past Roxburgh House along Parktown North's popular 7th Avenue, you wouldn't think that a treasure such as Wizards Vintage was hidden away on the top floor. But don't let the unassuming exterior fool you; the interior is a lovely, large, and light-filled hunting ground for lovers of designer and vintage fashion. Some Joburgers know them from their days in a historic Westcliff mansion, or you may have come across their Instagram account – highly recommended for fabulous and funny reels, and great styling tips.
Wizards Vintage has been in business since 2008, founded by Annabelle Desfontaines Everest, whose retail experience spans over 40 years, and Braam Naude, with over 30 years of expertise in the industry.
The Parktown North store is managed by Naude, who flies the vintage flag high. With his keen eye for style, he helps customers dress with confidence – whether for a special event or to add to a carefully curated wardrobe. (Everest, the store's beloved custodian, is taking a well-deserved break in the Karoo.)
The personalised service is part of what makes Wizards special. It's not just a place to pop in and browse solo, although we're sure you'll be left to your own devices if that's what you prefer. But Naude is more than happy to make suggestions and put together outfits for you, and it's a joy to watch him in action – pulling elements together from various racks and shelves. You may walk out with something completely unexpected and utterly inspired.
Thrift, but make it boujee – what's on offer at Wizards Vintage
Fur coats (real and faux), couture, designer pyjamas – it's all here. Wizards Vintage is a vibrant space as well as a welcoming one; take a seat in the lounge area in between browsing, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, and trade stories and ideas with Naude and the team. Of course, you're mainly here to shop for beautiful and bespoke pieces.
With a wide and ever-rotating selection of vintage and gently worn designer clothing, shoes, and handbags, plus sunglasses, jewellery, and accessories galore, it's worth blocking out a few hours for Wizards. The more time you spend here, the more gems you're likely to discover, and you'll want to take your time trying things on.
Brands you may come across include Loewe, Karl Lagerfield, Vince, Alexander McQueen, Prada, and Gucci. There are high-end but non-designer brands on the racks too, as well as local labels like Tiaan Nagel, Guillotine, and Marianne Fassler. Bring a keen eye and an adventurous spirit.
The curated collection of pre-owned items allows you to step into the world of high fashion at a fraction of the cost. "Buying vintage isn't just about great deals – it's about giving beautiful pieces a second life and reducing waste," says Naude. "At Wizards Vintage, we believe fashion is more than just clothing – it's self-expression, sustainability, and a way to own a little luxury without breaking the bank."
What Naude loves about shopping in this way is that it lets you experiment with your personal style through timeless, high-quality pieces. And if you're trying to downsize instead of gather, take your pre-loved beauties to Wizards to sell. The store is entirely consignment based.
Having been fans of Wizards since they ran their operation from a mansion in Westcliff, we had to pop in at the Parktown North store to see it for ourselves. We had a ball scouring the racks and playing dress up, and will certainly be back for more.
Looking for outfits for South African Fashion Week 2025 at Wizards
Our visit to Wizards Vintage in Parktown North in March 2025 was fortuitously ahead of South African Fashion Week (SAFW) at The Forum Hyde Park (Thu, Apr 24 – Sat, Apr 26, 2025). What better place to score a styling outfit for the occasion? And Naude needed no convincing to help us play dress up. (Our very own Unathi Nkhoma and Ruvesen Naidoo took one for the team.)
Naude went around the shop like a whirlwind, pulling items out and asking us for our thoughts along the way. He's a master at putting together the unexpected, unafraid to be playful and daring. And it pays off. Fifteen minutes later, we were decked out from head to toe. While the results were mixed – one of us over the moon, determined never to take the outfit off, while the other remained unconvinced – it was a wholly pleasant experience. And we're certain that if we had more time, Naude would've pulled a new outfit out of the bag that hit the mark. All this means is that a return visit is in order.
