Artist Sara Melzer-Weinfeld was born in Nowy Sącz in 1927, moving with her Jewish family to Nowy Targ and then Gorlice, from which they fled Nazi occupation by continuing to move east until they reached Lwów. In 1940 the family was exiled to Siberia where they endured the hardships of a political prisoner camp and later working in a gold mine. Eventually the surviving family returned to Poland after the war and moved to Germany where they awaited documents that would help them emigrate to Israel. Arriving in 1948, Sara and her brothers became volunteer soldiers in Israel's War of Independence. She later became a teacher and began honing her skills as an artist. In her work she grapples with some of the brutal experiences of the early 20th century, imposing the question of why it is so important to remember upon her audience. Her work draws upon her own memories and family documents, and uses such techniques such as painting and bas-reliefs made from paper. The show's official opening will take place on February 28th at 17:00.
