Organised in honour of the centenary of the birth of Karol Wojtyła (1920–2005), known to the world as John Paul II, MOCAK presents this diverse group exhibition devoted entirety to the phenomenon of the Polish Pope. The works included focus on different aspects of the presence of John Paul II in the public awareness, highlighting the industry of mass-produced images of the Pope, the adoration of the Pope through products intended to fuel his cult, as well as the manner in which the important events of his pontificate were presented by the media. The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication comprising the curatorial text, concise biographical notes of the participating artists, and an essay by cultural anthropologist Stanisław Obirek, who presents the phenomenon of John Paul II in historical, religious and cultural contexts.
