Inspired by Polish playwright Karol Szymanowski's fascination orientalism and antiquity, King Roger is musically and thematically-rich, and unquestionable one of the great masterpieces of 20th-century opera. Now brought to the stage by the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk, King Roger recounts the historical figure, Roger II of Sicily, who experienced Christian enlightenment after living a life of 'pagan ideals'.
