Joburg restaurants - nine great local delis

03 Apr 2018

When you feel like a home-cooked meal, made by someone else, or need to stock up for a picnic on a perfect day in one of the city’s parks, skip the supermarket and support one of Joburg's local delis. Here are just ten of the best the city has to offer.

BABA G
Named for the Middle Eastern aubergine dish babaganoush, this small rotisserie chicken takeaway spot specialises in Afro-Mediterranean flavours. Choose one of three varieties of roast chicken; and pair it with a selection of salads and super soft 'pillow breads' made fresh with your order or alternatively get a takeaway chicken wrap. If you can’t wait to get home there’s a counter in the store to eat at. Read our full review here. Illovo

CHEESE GOURMET
One of the few places in Joburg that can actually lay claim to the title of stocking truly ‘artisanal products’. The owners are champions of slow food and the deli stocks more than 140 cheese varieties, preserves and cured meats produced with care and sourced directly from local farms. CREMALAT
Cremalat houses an Italian restaurant (La Cucina @Cremalat), a cheese factory and an Italian deli set in a large, Tuscan-style building in a nondescript office park. Browse for cheeses, gourmet pasta and other Italian goodies, or order a massive plate of pasta. Plan ahead as the restaurant is often booked out. Read our full review here. Edenvale

FOURNOS
Consistently voted Joburg’s best bakery, this large deli and café is a busy neighbourhood stop, particularly on weekends. The chocolate croissants and the extensive and well-priced breakfast menu are star attractions while the deli section has a great selection of cheeses, freshly made pastas and sauces, cold meats, salads and other picnic basket or casual meal must-haves. LA MARINA FOODS
This established food wholesaler serves great sushi and a super breakfast of fluffy scrambled eggs (truffle powder optional). It's not on any major city route but if you travel for Epicurean delights they have it all – including locally-made pestos, whole smoked salmons, French black cherries and exotic teas. If there's anything you can't find in the store, owner Kirsten Jooste vows to source it for you from anywhere in the world. Read our full review here. Modderfontein

THE LEOPARD + KITCHEN + LARDER +CAN DO
Andrea Burgener's Melville restaurant The Leopard was a Joburg institution. Now closed its innovative dishes, made daily, can be found packaged and ready to take away from this deli in 44 Stanley. The Leopard's reputation is built on using the finest locally produced ingredients and a focus on sustainability. Heat-up or just go-ahead-and-serve meals, so good you'll want to claim you made them yourself. Read our full review here. 44 Stanley, Milpark

MAFIOSI ITALIAN DELI
Owned by Roman expat Cristian Caravello, this family-run deli is an authentic slice of the old country transplanted into a small corner of Birnam's Blubird shopping centre. Four high tables are squeezed in amongst shelves stacked with Italian imports and there are also three benches oiutside where you can enjoy Caravello's traditional penne pesto or spaghetti carbonara made with guanciale according to time-honoured family recipes. Read our full review here. Birnam

SUPER SCONTO
This Italian food emporium has a superb range of pastas, cheeses and olive oils. Super Sconto was once the heart of Johannesburg's Little Italy. While the Italian community is no longer centred around this area the store remains a go-to destination. Stray upstairs for a panini and espresso. Hot lunches are served from Tue to Fri, and Mon to Sat there's fresh homemade pizza. Read our full review here. Orange Grove

TORTELLINO D'ORO
Bring a big budget to this family-run eatery and deli and elbow your way through the northern suburbs grande dames to stock up on pricey necessities like melanzane, Spinach Malfatti (ricotta and spinach dumplings) and anchovy pâté. There’s excellent pasta, veal and fillet dishes and a fine dessert selection. Read our full review here. Oaklands

I found a delightful Italian Deli in Northlands Deco Park called Belle Fiori. Excellent coffee and great cold meats and cheese and I can never leave without ravioli, tortellini and Lebanese Garlic Paste!
