This exhibit at the Galicia Jewish Museum takes us into the world and imagination of Jan Marcin Szancer, the celebrated Polish illustrator. Known and beloved by anyone who grew up reading the poems and stories of Julian Tuwim, Jan Brzechwa and Hans Christian Anderson in Polish, Szancer's highly recognisable illustrations are as much a part of the legacy of books like Akademia Pana Kleksa (Mr. Inkblot's Academy) as the words themselves. On display are several dozen of Szancer's most important and beautiful works from his extensive ouvre, as well as immersive installations created especially for the exhibit, including a whistling locomotive, double-bottomed closet and wall of 'invisible fears'. The theatrical design of the exhibit is aimed at children, but the exhibit also goes into some of the darker history of Szancer's biography, including his experience of both world wars and the repression he faced as a Jew.
