There is something truly magical about twinkling lights on a cold winter night. It is an experience that conjures nostalgic feelings and inspires a sense of warmth despite the low temperatures. There is a lot to love, but what if we told you that you could get all that and more at one of Croatia’s most spectacular medieval castles? If that sounds like your sort of vibe, get yourself to Trakošćan Castle this winter. Of course, you should get yourself to Trakošćan Castle whenever you can, but there is something taking place this winter that makes it an absolute must.

From November 7 through January 11, Trakošćan will become a Castle of Light, the first exhibition of its kind in Croatia. As the name suggests, lights will fill the castle grounds, creating a sumptuous fairytale that frames structures, forests, animals, and legends in a whole new light. The event is a collaboration with partners from Czechia, and the Castle of Light brings the beautiful shimmering seen so often in Prague to the grounds of this 13th-century castle just a short drive from the border with Slovenia.

This is Trakošćan Castle as you’ve never seen it before. Anything and everything will be lit up, from graceful horse and carriages to hunters, dogs, forests, musical instruments, tunnels, counts, countesses, and so much more. If it has existed in the long and storied history of Trakošćan Castle, it will glimmer under romantic lights this winter. The traditions of the aristocracy are given new life, but there is more to this than sparkling lights and a sense of nostalgia. This is an extravaganza to be interacted with, one where visitors become part of the magic.

Trakošćan Castle dates back to the 13th century and is one of the most impressive medieval structures in Croatia. It also happens to be one of the best-preserved castles in the country and is the perfect way to engage with the long and storied history of Croatia’s aristocracy. The nobles of centuries past probably didn’t foresee this grand castle being lit up with twinkling lights of all colours, but we think they would be amazed by the show.

The fun at Trakošćan isn’t just about twinkling lights. There is an entire schedule of events throughout the winter months, with plenty to enjoy for visitors of all ages. The Mystery Game on December 20 at 17:00 promises an intriguing evening, as visitors tackle riddles and suspense while searching the castle for clues to the mysterious case of a missing turkey. The special price of 25€ includes entry to the Castle of Light and participation in the game inside Trakošćan Castle. To secure your place, please make a reservation at info@trakoscan.hr

There will also be a special costumed tour every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 17:30 and 19:00 (€25 per person, with booking via info@trakoscan.hr), as well as the delightful workshop Secrets of the Fan: Seduction Without Words, focused on the hidden meanings of 19th-century flirtation, on November 29 at 17:00 (€25 per person, booking via info@trakoscan.hr), a presentation of the book Croatia Under the Stars by Branko Nađ and a lecture titled The Miraculous Universe by Ante Radonić on December 6, and a concert by Ivana Galić on December 13 (free admission).

Castle of Light is a gorgeous combination of historical grace and technological beauty, one where the romantic mysteries of the past shine brighter than ever before. The advent of light fundamentally changed the way humans live, and it continues to capture the imagination today as it always has. When that light is experienced through life-size sculptures and thoughtful installations. The extravaganza is a brilliant event for visitors of all ages and is the perfect way to spend a winter’s evening in Croatia.

Tickets for The Castle of Light are available online ranging from 8€ for individuals to 29€ for families and do not include entry to the Trakošćan Castle.
