Great art must always be preserved at all costs. Even during the violence of war, ensuring the survival of creations old and young is of paramount importance, for the present as much as the future. In 1942, a young priest-in-training understood this, and he used his opportunity to leave Croatia to build an art collection of great significance today. The art collection of Bishop Đura Kokša spans five centuries and contains over 700 works, and the centennial celebration of Kokša’s birth sees the collection of this Renaissance man open to the public. Kokša’s collection includes everything from old masters to 20th-century brilliance and is divided into four self-contained units, on show at the excellent Klovićevi Dvori gallery. Kokša’s life and work also get plenty of attention, making this a must-see exhibition. It runs until the beginning of March.
