'European' seems to be the trendy new term restaurants are using to separate themselves from the pack. Though it sounds distinctly unsexy or even current to us, 'European' typically denotes restaurants that favour modern, contemporary cuisine over traditional recipes. More and more upscale restaurants are offering 'authorial' cuisine invented by their head chefs, where creativity and innovative ideas are more valued than striving for authenticity in a certain dish. As such, you end up with a lot of menus that are highly unique and difficult to categorise.

There's certainly some overlap between our International and European categories (we list many restaurants in both categories), but the distinction for us is that 'International' implies a restaurant that serves more or less authentic dishes from several well understood categories of cuisine (imagine a restaurant whose menu offers burgers, pasta, pizza and seafood, for example), whereas 'European' implies more of a blending of cuisines and ingredients to create a contemporary Pan-European cuisine. Or something? Anyway, you'll find restaurants that fit the latter below.
